Shine A Light Lessons for Day Schools -3-5 Grade
This lesson uses the Chanukah story as a backdrop to orienting learners to important terminology to civic education:
- bullying
- antisemitism
- upstander
- bystander
- ally
- majority
- minority
Learners will engage in text study, take their turn at some drama activities, and experience multi-media triggers (songs and videos) in order to explore how Shining A Light on their Jewish joy can help them publicly display their Judaism and engage allies in any instance of antisemitism. The lesson culminates in a craft activity to synthesize the learning.

Mayim, our initial example of "Additional" Models, could be placed in a Multi-aged, Project-Based Learning, or Experiential Learning bucket. Mayim is a K-5 learning community in which depth of relationships and depth of learning are intentionally fostered and visible everywhere.

The Jewish Education Project has partnered with Eastern Suffolk BOCES (BOCES) to assist the Jewish (and other non-public) day schools in all processes related to Grades 3-8; NYSESLAT; and NYSITELL answer sheets which are no longer provided by New York State Education Department (NYSED) in the test booklets.
