No matter your curriculum or textbook, this resource offers strategies for addressing 10 common challenges that Hebrew students face when learning the AlefBet and/or prayer decoding. Each of the teaching strategies are accompanied by explanations of why the research tells us they work. Appendix A summarizes 12 key learnings from hands-on experiments by Jewish educators and Appendix C offers a very helpful newly uncovered strategy called "Sound BEFORE Print."

The ten challenges addressed are:

  • Hebrew letters
  • Vowel signs
  • Similar looking letter mix-ups
  • Siddur decoding
  • Torah decoding/chanting
  • Recitation vs decoding
  • Slow and laborious decoding
  • "Fossilized errors"
  • Middle-of-word mistakes
  • Getting "lost" in the siddur
