“Vayehi Erev”- “Let There Be Evening”, is one of Israel’s well known children’s picture books from the 1940s, written by Fania Bergstein and illustrated by Chaim Hausman. The story is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “What the Moon Saw” collection. The original illustrations capture some of the aesthetics of the Kibbutzim in the early 20th century. In this exercise we will reflect on two illustrations, one is the original of Hausman from 1949, and the second is the homage done by Lior Arditi in October 2023. We will explore differences and similarities and the loss of childhood and naivety.
