Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israel: What happened and how do we respond?

On October 7, Hamas launched a massive surprise attack against Israel, resulting in the worst massacre of Israeli civilians in the country’s history. Hundreds of Israelis have been killed, thousands injured, and dozens of Israeli soldiers and civilians are currently held captive in Gaza. After such a shocking and traumatic attack, and in light of ongoing conflict and uncertainty, how do we respond?
