Lesson

Through the lens of art, explore how inherited memory shapes who we are and how we see the world. What do we do with these stories from the past, and how will we use them to guide our way to the future?  For the Jewish people, how does inherited memory, specifically related to Holocaust, affect how we see ourselves and our place in the world? Explore how memory can take many forms: memories of events we have experienced, memories we have heard about as family stories, memories seen through images in popular culture, or even memories of an imagined world. How may these memories differ from first-hand testimonies?

Includes an exploration into concepts surrounding inherited memory, discussion around artists working with inherited memory, and a guide for creating an in-class poem.
