NGSS Part 1: Introduction to NGSS

This introductory session will introduce teachers to the paradigm shift involved with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Compared to previous standards which task students to “describe” or “understand,” the NGSS is built more around practicing science through Science and Engineering Practices and drawing thematic connections through Crosscutting Concepts beyond just the content taught which the standards refer to as the Disciplinary Core Ideas. The NGSS also has a tremendous amount of insight regarding assessment and interdisciplinary learning.

In this session, we will focus on the dimensions of the standards, phenomenon-based learning (a strategy to tackle all dimensions of the standard), and shifts in the Disciplinary Core Ideas to ensure that teachers know the boundary of content ideas in their grade-level. Opportunities to initially plan and pace the year with the Catapult coach will be provided.
