There's Nothing Virtual About Online Relationships: Creating Community By Being Truly Present

Due to its high registration numbers and successful run in October 2020, we are offering this series again!
This three-session course will delve into how to create community online. Going beyond tools and techniques, we will explore how the choices we make around being present can best support the development of connections between individuals and the building of a community with shared values and goals. We will consider how what we learn about ourselves and each other in an online space can further support community building as it flows to offline spaces.
We will meet synchronously on Zoom three times. In each session, we will take a closer look at one core component of being present online. We will experience pedagogy and digital tools that allow us to bring that component of online community building to life. Asynchronous discussion and sharing amongst participants will be encouraged between Zoom sessions.
Each participant will need a laptop or desktop with a functional camera and microphone for all learning sessions. WiFi and Internet access are required.

Session 1 (February 4, 2021, from 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM ET) - Bringing Ourselves into Online Spaces: How do we invite and sustain emotional connection online?
Session 2 (February 9, 2021 from 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM ET) - Recognizing Others in Online Spaces: How do we communicate and collaborate around meaningful content in online spaces?
Session 3 (February 11, 2021, from 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM ET) - Moving Forward Together: How do we shift from “me to we” to become a unified group with shared values and goals, a true online community?

PRESENTER:
Mindy Gold is the Founder and Lead Consultant of EdtechMMG, an education consulting firm. Her work and research focus on relationship-centered professional learning and educational technology. Mindy blends the power of digital and non-digital technologies to create communities of learners around reflective practice in online and face-to-face learning. She is the Graduate Program Leader of the Mandel Teacher Educator Institute (MTEI) and a Coach for the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership. She has also taught as an Instructor for Gratz College’s NEXT program. Mindy holds a Masters in Teaching from National Louis University (Chicago, IL) and a Certificate in Jewish Education from The University of Cincinnati. She lives in Nashville, TN with her husband and two sons.

Mayim, our initial example of "Additional" Models, could be placed in a Multi-aged, Project-Based Learning, or Experiential Learning bucket. Mayim is a K-5 learning community in which depth of relationships and depth of learning are intentionally fostered and visible everywhere.

Our Village takes a learner-centered approach in everything they do. Learners’ questions and concerns are the starting place for each lesson and faculty engage in comprehensive training to support this orientation. An essential component of this approach is the development of deep relationships throughout the learning community. This community is unabashedly welcoming of all learners and families. As a result, students develop life skills to become change-makers and social justice advocates through the lens of Jewish history, thought, and practice.
