Even though the 2024-2025 school year isn't quite over yet, it is time to start thinking about how we can strategically design welcoming spaces and opening activities for our teens this fall.

As a follow up to Erica Frankel's 'user experience' webinar in January, let's learn from each other and share best practices from our own communities. Paige (virtual programming focus) and Celeste (in-person programming focus) will open the session by sharing ways that they create a welcoming space for their teens and share their favorite connection activities. Then the floor will open for participants to do the same.

Whether you operate primarily in an in-person, hybrid, or virtual setting, there will be a lot to learn and a lot to share with colleagues from around the country. You will enter with one or two ideas, and (hopefully) leave with 10+ ideas! Whether you are in a youth group, Hebrew high, teen leadership, teen philanthropy, madrichim program or any other teen serving Jewish organization, this interactive webinar is for YOU!

Here's what YOU need to bring:
  1. Type up a way that you have successfully created a welcoming space for your teens (or how you might do so). Is it the signage? Is it the theme of the food? Is it door greeters? Is it a volunteer job for early arrivals?
  2. Type up a fun, creative, and/or engaging connection activity (aka ice breaker!) that teen enjoy in your program.
  3. And bring any questions, thoughts, or support that you want to discuss with colleagues...consider them your Personal Help Desk!

Here's the flow of the session:

  • Erica Hruby will welcome and frame the conversation
  • Paige GoldMarche will present her best practices for welcoming and connecting in a virtual environment
  • Celeste Albert will present her best practices for welcoming and connecting in an in-person environment
  • We'll open a virtual discussion room and an in-person discussion room led by our facilitators
  • Participants from each room will share their ideas (2-3 minutes each) and then add their ideas directly into a shared document
  • Once sharing is done, then it is time for the Professional Help Desk! 
    We'll end together as a whole group and everyone will walk away with access to the shared document!

Erica Hruby

Erica Hruby, M.A. is a Jewish educator with nearly 30-years of teaching, curriculum writing, and professional development experience in Jewish community, academic, and residential environments. Erica serves as Senior Manager, National Teen Education and Engagement at The Jewish Education Project. She is also the founder of Anchored Parenting, LLC where she serves as a parent educator and coach. Erica has an M.A. from Georgia School of Professional Psychology in Clinical Psychology with a focus on children and adolescents. She lives on the West Coast of Florida with her high school sweetheart with whom she shares two adult daughters.

Paige GoldMarche

Paige is Moving Traditions’ Director of the Meyer-Gottesman Kol Koleinu Teen Feminist Fellowship, a year-long program that gives teens across the country the skills to take part in Jewish, feminist social change-making and community building. Paige holds an MA degree in Jewish Communal Service from Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University, a Certificate in Non-Profit Studies from Johns Hopkins University, and a BA in International Development and Social Change from Clark University. When Paige isn’t connecting teens to life-changing curriculum, she can be found hanging out with her wife and kids, baking challah for friends, and building community among her neighbors. 

Celeste Alberts
Celeste Albert

Celeste Albert, LCSW, is the Coordinator of Teen Programs at Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Greater Mercer County, NJ a position she has held for the past 20 years. Two programs that she administers are Gesher LeKesher and the Jewish Community Youth Foundation (JCYF).  Gesher LeKesher is a Jewish peer leadership program that trains teens from all backgrounds of Judaism to lead group discussions on trending topics through a Jewish lens. In JCYF, teens from 8th-12th grade evaluate grant requests, interview agency staff, fund grant proposals from Jewish nonprofits and each grade have a unique philanthropic focus.  Celeste has presented on Youth Philanthropy and Social Action at national youth philanthropy conferences and served on the Honeycomb (formerly known as the Jewish Teen Funders Network) Advisory Committee.  Celeste has also created the JCYF Advisory Board and Alumni Connect, a program connecting current Teen Program Participants with Alumni Teen Program Participants and Business Professionals.

Celeste also organizes Good Deeds Day.  Each year teens participate in various service projects that benefit local social service agencies like Homefront, RISE, and the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.

Outside of work, Celeste is an active member of the Sharon Elementary PTA in Robbinsville where she created “Sharon Shines” - a community service program for Preschool to 4th graders at Sharon Elementary School where participants interface with local nonprofits and participate in a project benefitting these organizations.  Celeste also created “Boomer’s Last Hurrah” – a 4th grade legacy program that teaches 4th graders about the legacy they leave behind and gives these students the opportunity to give back to others in their elementary school before they graduate.  Celeste also is currently the Chair of the Membership Committee at Beth El Synagogue.

Celeste received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Minors in Sociology and Women’s Studies at The College of New Jersey and Masters in Social Work at Rutgers University.  Celeste is also a Certified New Jersey Disaster Response Crisis Counselor and Certified Social Work Field Instructor.
