In Person: Productive Struggle in the Math Classroom

_{This workshop is part of our longstanding math series and is a great opportunity to meet and talk with other teachers of mathematics!}

In this workshop, we will explore the idea of productive struggle as we ourselves “productively struggle” with growing in our own roles as teachers and leaders of math learning. Participants will:

• Define productive struggle and articulate reasons that it needs to happen on a regular basis
• Undergo a variety of short, fun non-math activities to acknowledge common teacher moves that often contradict the principles of productive struggle
• Develop a list of strategies teachers can use to support productive struggle
• Put those strategies into action with some grade-level examples
• Role-play to try out different kinds of supports that keep the struggle but also keep it productive

About the presenter:

Dennis Desormier meets thousands of teachers each year in his workshops and school visits. His professional experience combines years of classroom teaching with curriculum and instructional design experience with several publishers and school districts. However, his greatest love in the education field is professional development for teachers, school leaders, and district leaders in the areas of mathematics and assessment. He has written or co-written most of the mathematics and assessment workshops currently presented by Catapult staff around the country as well as some of the STEAM workshops. He has a passion for balancing rigorous teaching and learning with a lighthearted environment.
