About this event
How did Nathan Alterman view the Arabs who fought against the establishment of Israel, and those who became citizens of the new state?
Join The Jewish Education Project for an intimate learning session with Dr. Rachel Korazim, a leading Jewish educator and internationally renowned teacher of Israeli literature, known for bringing Hebrew poetry to life for diverse audiences around the world.
Rachel will share and explore selected poems from her new bilingual anthology of Alterman’s work, The Mirror of the Times, a project spearheaded by Rachel together with the Department of Jewish Peoplehood in the Office of the Vice Chair of the World Zionist Organization, Dr. Yizhar Hess. Many of the poems will be available in English for the first time.
One of the central voices of modern Hebrew poetry, Alterman wrote in response to the political and moral challenges of his time, moving between poetry and public life. His poems reveal a complex and sometimes contradictory perspective: fierce in defending Israel’s right to exist, yet equally determined to expose injustices committed against Arab civilians. From the violence of the 1930s through the War of Independence and beyond, Alterman challenges us to consider the boundaries between security and human rights, national loyalty and moral responsibility. A conversation that remains strikingly relevant today, in Israel and for us.
Light breakfast served from 9:15am. Learning with Rachel begins 9:30am.
