Heroism and Hope: Recharging Israel Education in a Post-October 7 World

Heroism and Hope calls for a transformative approach to Israel education. Written in the aftermath of October 7, David Bryfman argues that Jewish education must evolve, integrating Israel education in deeper, more comprehensive ways.

Rather than relying on advocacy scripts or crisis-driven responses that exhaust educators and alienate learners, Bryfman invites readers to reimagine Israel’s role as a source of meaning, moral reflection, Jewish identity, and resilient hope.

  • A renewed vision for Israel education beyond advocacy and slogans
  • A framework for teaching Israel with moral clarity and emotional honesty
  • Language for welcoming personal stories and perspectives into learning
  • A pathway toward resilience and hope that does not avoid hard truths

In a post-October 7 world, many Jewish educators, parents, and communal leaders are asking the same urgent questions: How do we teach Israel honestly? How do we hold grief and complexity without collapsing into slogans, silence, or defensiveness? And how do we help learners build Jewish identity and resilience when the ground has shifted?

Drawing on personal journeys, educator voices, and decades of experience, David Bryfman offers a grounded and accessible guide to this moment, not as a manifesto, but as an invitation to ask the essential and challenging questions that Israel education now demands. Heroism and Hope challenges reactive approaches that center crisis management and advocacy alone. Instead, it calls for proactive, values-driven education rooted in humanity, honesty, and hope, where personal stories and diverse perspectives are welcomed into the learning experience.

At its heart, Heroism and Hope empowers educators to serve as moral guides, and helps communities reimagine Israel education as a space for meaning-making, relationship, and enduring Jewish connection.

“In ‘Heroism and Hope,’ Dr. David Bryfman zeros in on a key factor that shapes our comprehension and worldview like no other: education. Bryfman's wealth of experience in the field of Jewish and Israel education has generated an indispensable tool for understanding the reverberations of the October 7 rupture throughout the Jewish world. I am confident this book will enrich the important conversations beginning to take place since, concerning the scope and particularly the focus of Israel education, and I am sincerely encouraged by the vision its author presents."
