Julius Lester converted to Judaism in 1982. He has said that his conversion journey began when he was seven and learned that his mother’s father was a Jewish immigrant from Germany who married a freed slave.

Through a picture book written by Lester, an accompanying video, as well as a thoughtful discussion guide and worksheet, students aged 4-8 will study race through the lens of a unique story of Jewish identity. They will question what race means to them and the potential weight it holds on their own identities.

This unique lesson includes the following components:

  • Video narration of the book "Let's Talk About Race" by Julius Lester
  • Discussion guide
  • My Story worksheet
